The northeastern part of the fortified border defense system of the Roman Pannonia Province, the limes ran along the area of today's Visegrád. The remains of the Roman camp and fort guarding the wall can be found on the Sibrik Hill. The fort had a deltoid plan, 11 towers and it was built during the reign of Constantine the Great in the 320's.

Centuries later, Saint Stephen made Visegrád an administrative center and also the first church of the settlement was built on the hill. Because of the this, the city center was located on the hill until the Mongolian invasion.

The archaeological excavations resulting in rich findings from many periods started in the 1970's with the leading of Mátyás Szőke.
