Allee Shopping Mall opened in 2009 providing not only a wide range of shopping facilities but also functioning as a venue for exhibitions, concerts and other events, too.

It replaced the legendary department store of Skála, which uncommonly did not fit the mold of stores in the communist era but followed the concept of western counterparts, such as the German Hertie store chain or the Staffa in Wien.

The first store of the Skála chain designed by István Kovách opened in 1976 near the Market Hall of Fehérvári Street. The 3-storey building had a precast reinforced concrete structure with lightweight internal walls. The facade was covered with white aluminum plates that became a signature feature of the store. In order to keep products in the center of customers’ attention the store did not have windows. Innovations like escalators, cash registers in a row, background music and shopping trolleys were first experienced here.

The department store pioneered in building engineering also with an automatic fire alarm system and air-conditioning. The parking lot for 400 cars was neither among the basic facilities of stores at the time.

After the political changes of ’89, following changes in ownership and a merger, it was pulled down and construction works of a brand new mall began in 2007.

Allee designed by Antal Fekete opened in 2009. Shops of the lower three levels are accessible from a spacious, glass-roofed central passage and two atriums. Upper level offices are accessible by elevators. Allee is neighbored by a residential block of nearly 100 apartments (Simplon Yard).

Mainly limestone and marble was used for interior floor covers while walls are decorated with wooden plates. The facade is covered with a combination of brick and glass cladding. The parking lot has a capacity of 1200 cars and accessible through a tunnel under Kőrössy József Street.

Since 2015 Allee has been a pet-friendly mall.

Allee is home to various temporary exhibitions and other events, such as fashion shows and concerts as well. At Christmas a huge Christmas tree and other seasonal decorative elements change the interior.
